Personally, I was passionately "Ignited" when I saw Marbled Art at an art festival in Portland, Oregon thirty five years ago. I took one class and was so amazed by its possibilities of expression. At the time, I could not devote myself to the craft since I was going to Graduate school and then I started teaching Gifted students in public school full time. Teaching consumed all my attention and time. The librarian at my school provided an enrichment activity for students in the accelerated reading program utilizing "model car" paints to float on the surface of the water. The students were thrilled by the way their colors could be manipulated to produce designs. An effect was produced but did not portray the potential possibilities of what can be achieved by using carrageenan thicked water and treated paper or fabric. After I retired and moved to Washington state, I found a workshop that taught fabric marbling. I was hooked and have been "playing" with its expression for 5 years now. I enjoy utilizing the traditional techniques of marbling that have been a hidden secrete for hundreds of years and that can be seen on the end papers of old books. I like to be creative with the images that shift and change like clouds in the sky. The marbling painting is done on the surface of carrageenan water and then picked up on paper or fabric. Images pop up that resemble animals, whales, birds, and fish. Profiles of people pop into view amidst landscapes and seas. We are all water creatures on this water planet just as clouds in the sky so familiar images pop into being.

With a stylus (bamboo skewer) you swirl or draw parallel lines intersected by perpendicular bands. Ah, now it looks like the endpapers in old books. Carefully pull a rake across the surface and wa-la, repetition of colored lines can be swirled into circles, curly cues, waves or any shape. The shapes that you intend might not be that but something else entirely. You can't predict what it will look like when you pick it up on paper or fabric. Ah, the fun of the unexpected-surprise! When dry, if no images jump out at you--then turn it upside down or sideways. Relax and gaze at it with pleasure and open to what imagination formulates. Joy of creation! Patience and joy dance together. What will I see? Are you fascinated with clouds? Do you enjoy watching oily rainbow colors swirl in a puddle in a parking lot? Can you capture the images that you identify with in tree bark, or peeling paint in a drawing or photo? Clouds shift and if you turn your head away, you might not be able to locate where you saw that animal, or person, or bird or fish. It's changed into something else now. The image making abilities of your brain ! how fun. Image making -- Imagination. The concept of "Magic" is in that concept word too. Are you seeing into your akashic record memory or are you scribing forms of animals you have seen in a book or film or nature? Speculating moves you away from direct experiencing. If you see two similar dots , they can easily become two eyes and your brain fills in the lines that are missing and sees the whole. Isn't that neat and creative? Fun. Amusement. Imagination. And the clouds move on.
